Small Steps Make a Big Difference

I have this co-worker who always wears a grumpy face. She barely talks to people and rarely smiles. Sometimes, she would also point out people’s mistakes very straightforwardly, without holding back. Despite this, I’ve always tried to build a good relationship with her by sharing food almost every day.

Two cups of coffee — one for me and one for her.

Six pieces of pandesal — three for each of us.

Two packs of biscuits.

Four slices of ham.

And so on.

To my surprise, this month she started doing the same.

Two oranges.

Two boiled eggs for our breakfast.

Chocolates.

But the best part wasn't the food; it was the smiles she also started giving me. She also started giving compliments, saying “I like your shirt today!”. Her words have also started becoming softer.

It turns out that consistent, selfless kindness really is powerful enough to melt even the most frozen heart. Indeed, small steps can make a big difference in the world. 💕
